Guidelines vs Standards
It is important to understand that most anti-ligature requirements in Australia are currently classified as guidelines rather than mandatory standards. However, they are effectively mandatory for government-funded health projects through state policy directives and accreditation requirements. Victoria is leading the push toward formalisation, and industry experts expect national standards to follow.
Australasian Health Facility Guidelines (AusHFG)
The AusHFG, published by AHIA, is the primary guideline framework for health facility design across Australia and New Zealand. Key documents include HPU 131 (Mental Health Overarching Guideline) and Part C Section 6 (Safety and Security).
